HOUSTON, TEXAS (February 19, 2012) The Houston Cougars baseball team started the 2012 campaignin royal fashion, sweeping their opening weekend three-game series against theDelaware BlueHens.
Friday’s game was rescheduled to Saturday morning due tosevere weather conditions in the Houston area.
The Cougars and the BlueHens played a double header onSaturday and finished the three-game series with a 1:00pm start on Sunday.
In the first game of the Saturday double header, the Cougarscame back from a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the 8th inning toscore seven runs to clinch the win.
Jacob Lueneburg and John Cannon went 2-for-3 for the Cougarswith each scoring a run. Taylor White added to the hit total, going 2-for-4,also with a run.
Chase Wellbrock, pitching one-third of an inning in reliefgot the win while Jeff Murray recorded the loss for the BlueHens.
In the second game of the double header, the Cougarsexploded for 15 hits to win their second game of the season 16-1.
Seven of the runs came in the first innings with an additionalfive more scoring in the fourth.
The BlueHens tallied five errors in the game whichundoubtedly attributed to the loss.
On Sunday, the Cougars made it a clean sweep of Delawarewith a 9-2 win in front of 907 fans at Cougar Field.
Cougar starting pitcher Aaron Garza threw six completeinnings giving up one run on five hits while striking out three and walkingtwo.
The Galveston native, who is a true freshman, faced 24batters and threw 71 pitches.
At the plate, Price Jacobs showed hit skill by going 5-of-11for .455, scoring five runs and knocking in seven RBI. The Baytown, Texasnative is also a true freshman.
The Cougars are now 3-0 for the season and will return toCougar Field for a 6:30pm matchup against Texas A&M Corpus Christi onTuesday night (Feb 21).
They will then play Texas State in a three game series athome on Feb. 24-26.
